Man Sentenced for Illegally Possessing Gun

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 20, 2011

Madison, Wis. - John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Edgar Santos Ortiz, 38, Watertown, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb to 16 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm and ammunition while a prohibited person. Santos Ortiz, a native and citizen of Mexico, is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition because he is present in the United States illegally.

In sentencing Santos Ortiz, Judge Crabb noted her concern that the large number of false identification documents that were also recovered with the firearm suggested additional criminal activity.

The charges against Santos Ortiz were the result of an investigation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Watertown Police Department. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Meredith P. Duchemin.
